Alex The Cat

Those of you who are regulars here probably remember the story of Alex.  For those of you who are new, this is a girl I swore I wouldn't mention ever again a while back, but then I did anyway.  Several times, in fact.  Basically, I'm still not fully over her, even though I should be at this point.  It's kind of complicated, but I think I've finally figured out a better way to explain what I'm going through, so I'm going to display my writing skills here and tell you the story in fairy tale form.  On the surface, this might seem childish or overly simplistic, but I find that fairy tales have an uncanny element of truth and clarity in them that ordinary formats can't achieve.  So find a comfy chair, and let me tell you the tale of Alex the Cat...

Once upon a time, there was a boy.  He lived in a far away land, where there weren't many other people, so the boy was very lonely.  He spent most of his time wandering the fields and woods near his home.
One day, he found a cat sitting beside a path that he often walked on.  The boy was lonely, and very much wanted a friend, so he walked over to the cat to see if she was friendly.  At first, the cat seemed afraid of him, but then she came closer to him, and followed him home.  The boy noticed that the cat had been hurt somehow.  Whether it was from a cruel owner, or the dangers of the world, he couldn't tell, but it made him want to help the cat if he could.  When they arrived home that day, the boy opened his door, hoping the cat would come inside, where it was warm, but the cat would not go in, and went back into the forest.
The next day, the boy came up with a plan.  He left out some milk and food for the cat, hoping it would come back to his home and be his friend.  Later that day, the cat did come back, and ate what the boy had left for her.  She even let him stroke her soft head as she ate.  The boy was so happy at this he decided to give the cat a name, and he named the cat Alex.
For many weeks, the boy left food and milk by his door for Alex the cat, and she would always come to eat and let him stroke her soft head.  Soon, Alex's wounds began to heal, and her coat looked shiny and new, and she hardly looked like a stray at all.
One day soon after this, the boy decided he would like to keep Alex for his own.  After all, they were friends, and Alex had no home of her own, so it was an obvious decision.  The boy tried to pick up Alex to bring her into the house, but Alex did not want to be picked up, and she hissed and scratched at the boy, and ran away into the forest.
The boy was confused at what had happened.  He had shown Alex nothing but kindness, yet she'd attacked him as if she'd never known him at all.  The boy left food and milk out for Alex the next day, but she never came.  The boy wasn't ready to give up yet though, so he went out into the forest calling Alex's name, but still she did not come to him.  After this, the boy got very sad.  He wished he hadn't tried to pick up Alex, and that they could be friends again, but Alex never came back to the boy's house again.  The boy lived on, and made other friends, but there are times he still thinks of Alex.  Sometimes, when he feels lonely, he leaves a little food and milk on his doorstep at night, just in case Alex ever decides to come back.

On a semi-related note, (and if this story didn't make you hate cats) I would like you all to check out this blog, made by a friend of mine.  If there's a way you could help, I'm sure it would make her very happy.

  1. You're right about one thing: fairy tales really do convey truth and clarity. Your story is poignant and something that we can all identify with. Maybe one day the cat will return home, but in the meantime don't allow yourself to be hurt by its absence. Be happy in spite of it and everything else will work out.
