Last night, I went out and did some things I have never done before. I went to a local bar with a few friends in attendance (I may or may not have invited myself to this thing), and did karaoke for real.
I didn't actually get to sing any of the songs I requested (I figure because they were semi-obscure choices - advantage: KROD), but I did end up singing a few songs in the end. The crowd wasn't very big, but it was enough that things weren't completely awkward.
The first one was totally accidental. I thought I heard my name get called, only to realize that it was someone else's song. The guy was a little late getting to the mic, so I stayed put and it ended up being a tag-team sort of thing. I ended up stumbling through it so badly that he questioned if I even knew the song. But, it was kind of fun.
The next one was better. Myself and a few friends got up on stage and performed Bohemian Rhapsody. Somehow, I think this song captured the essence of what karaoke is supposed to be. It was fun, silly, and we had a good time doing it.
I got to do another song that night as well (I may have the order of things mixed up here, but it's not important). Somehow, I got to sing The Time Warp with a few nice girls. The one I shared a mic with was pretty much the best singer in the room, so I kind of felt like I was screwing up her song. But, I got to stand close to some nice looking girls and sing a fun song, so it wasn't all bad.
The night wore on, and although I didn't have much, I spent most of it in a sleepy, semi-drunk state. I was a little peeved that I didn't get to do any of my solo requests, (and also that they didn't have any Elvis Costello songs available) but I had a good time laughing at my friends and a few assorted drunk strangers.
I had fun, but I have to say that it isn't quite what I imagined. Maybe this is because of the small crowd, but I wish there had been more women around. I spent a good portion of the night staring at women who were either obviously taken, or probably would look away in disgust if I tried to talk to them. It was a little frustrating, but I guess it was my first time there, and I shouldn't judge things by that.
Overall, it was a pretty good night, and I didn't wake up with a horrible hangover, so I think it worked out okay. Maybe, when I feel up to it, I'll go again some night on my own, and sing a song for a nice girl I find.
Awesome! I'm a little envious because I haven't been to a karaoke bar in ages, and it's so much fun.
ReplyDeleteAlso, most people who choose to do Time Warp tend to not care the most about people "screwing up" their songs. I mean, honestly, we're already singing something from RHPS; we're totally game for embarrassment (not that screwing up is embarrassing, but we're just not that shy about it).
